Review: Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe

Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe
Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe by Bryan Lee O’Malley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

So much like the movie, yet an entire entity of its own. So worth the five stars! What can I say, though, without spoiling it?

This is the book where Scott’s voyage through the Seven Deadly Exes really takes a turn. The fight against the Katayanagi twins, Kyle and Ken, was so different and new, I almost thought Scott wouldn’t make it to the end of the book–whether he did or not is for you to read. (although, come on, there is a book 6).

There are more parties Scott and Ramona attend, more random Scott events, more of Kim Pines and Stephen Styles and…just so much more. All of it brand new to me, making it like a whole new series for the characters I love so much. The story turns in unexpected ways…and i admit, I was little heartbroken, but in that good, “NO THIS CANT BE HAPPENING” to the characters sort of way. I sat at the end of this with a slight dangle of shock to my jaw, thinking “Did that really just happen?”

Yep. It did.

So, not only was the book excellent (notice how quickly I’m moving so I don’t spoil anything), the extras were FANTASTIC, too.

Always a win with the additional art, deleted scenes, alternate covers, posters and t-shirt designs. I think the extras section is where I spend so much time, studying all the different, all the unseen, all the random Scott Pilgrim awesomeness. This one doesn’t disappoint.

If you haven’t read these because you think you saw the movies, you really don’t know what you’re missing. Read it. It’ll add bonus +100 Life, +100 Smarts, and you’ll get to collect coins totaling $77.99*.

*not really. Just one of those funny little things you notice as Scott defeats the exes.

*A JANU-RANDOM READ* – Best book of the series. Maybe.
