Five stars to the book that really took me by surprise!
Seriously. I picked up this book for my youngling, hoping the comic pages within would have her reading–boy was I wrong–so for hero month, I decided to go ahead and give it a go. And I am blown away.
When I read the description, I thought, meh, typical. May was upset with the death of her friend Libby. Before Libby’s death, the best friends created a heroine, Princess X. She lived in a haunted house. She carried a ninja sword. But those things were lost. Now someone else is doing their own Princess X and May is determined to find out who.
Seems typical read.
But it was so far from that!!! It wasn’t that Libby was trying to specifically find out who, it was that she thinks it’s Libby doing the comic. But how can that be when Libby’s dead?
Now, add in a hacker–Trick to May, Hat trick on the web, Patrick IRL–a mysterious homeless man–Jack–and someone who goes only be the name The Needle Man…given to him by these new Princess X web comics, and this story just takes off!!! One moment everything is calm and fine and the next, I was holding my breath and trying to read faster and faster to see if May can do the task or get safe or…find what she’s looking for.
The setting of the book is HIGHLY relatable–Seattle–because I know these places she’s been too. I’ve been there, so it was definitely easy to picture and I could concentrate on the events more. (The Freemont Troll was dead on…if you read this and haven’t seen the troll, google it. It will not disappoint.)
I kept expecting the worse. This character was lying or this person being involved was wrong…and usually with mysteries, I figure it out. But here, and maybe because I was expecting the worst, I wound up fairly surprised.
ONE BONUS NOTE: In the book, there are pages with a graphic novel feel that aids in telling the story. Not distracting in any way. At the bottom of one, I noticed a web address so I took out my phone and punched it in (my screencap here):
A page later in the book, however, they noticed the same address and typed it in, furthering May’s story.
All-in-all, a fantastic read! I recommend this one highly! What a wonderful surprise this one was!
*I NEED A HERO READ – MAY 2016* Going to make my youngling read this one for sure!
