Review: The Walking Dead, Vol. 01: Days Gone Bye

The Walking Dead, Vol. 01: Days Gone Bye
The Walking Dead, Vol. 01: Days Gone Bye by Robert Kirkman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I’ve been watching The Walking Dead ever since it first aired back in December 2010. There was something about the idea of the whole world going to h-e-double-hockey-sticks (sorry, channeling a character of mine) while someone was in a coma that really caught my attention.

While at Comic Con the next summer, I found out it was a graphic novel series. I decided right then and there that I couldn’t read it. I just don’t like my television or movies ruined, while knowing what may be coming in a book doesn’t bother me.

So, when I cracked open this volume of TWD, I was excited to relive that first season. Rick waking up from a coma in an abandoned hospital…and it was certainly close. Morgan, the man who first helped Rick into that world…Shane and Lori were there…Glenn…DALE!…Baby Carl!!!

It felt like home. Except it was so far from home!

All those times I’ve heard how different the books were, I really had no clue HOW DIFFERENT THE BOOK IS. It neither added nor subtracted from TWD world, but it was refreshing to have something new without losing someone I care about. Tyrese…oh, Tyrese…he was all the way back then. It was fun to see my favorite characters in a whole different light. Carol was never married. Shane was an *expletive* from the get go. Rick…

I really enjoyed it.

That being said, I feel like so much was left out of the story. I need more Glenn and more of the camp. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the comic’s version of Dale and Andrea’s tale…which I liked the show’s more. And I think that’s where it lost a star from me, just not enough of some people and too much of others. (Disclaimer: I never really liked Andrea to begin with…)

I can say I’m glad I started reading these. It’ll be interesting to compare the things I know from the show to what I had no clue about in the books. And I still plan to stop the second Negan shows with Lucille…NO SPOILERS FOR MY SHOWS!
