Review: The Walking Dead, Vol. 03: Safety Behind Bars

The Walking Dead, Vol. 03: Safety Behind Bars
The Walking Dead, Vol. 03: Safety Behind Bars by Robert Kirkman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

We’re at the prison already? Book 3? This is going way too fast.

I think by now, the main story of what I know is entirely different than what I’m reading. Yes, there is a prison, convicts, Walkers, fencing, Lori pregnant… It’s toddling along from winter into summer. They make all these extravagant plans for the prison. It’s their sanctuary.

It feels safe. Just like the show, safe secure, then all hell broke loose… So I’m expecting that for book 4. But for book three, it was nice to have somewhat a normal life so other dramas could come about. The appearance of Michonne was fantastic. Her story is somewhat different. And Carol isn’t the person I know now. Carl…LOL…

I’m trying to avoid spoilers. It’s difficult to balance some of the “people” between what I’m reading and what I’ve seen. It is VERY MUCH a different world.

  1. If it helps any, each of these volumes is made up of 5-6 monthly issues of the original comics (IIRC), so in volume 3 you’re about 1 year into the comic’s run. I started out avoiding the comics too, now I like seeing what the differences are compared to the show.

    • Some of the differences I love, some not as much. It’s really interesting to me to see what they kept with the show and what they dumped. My writer’s brain translates it into an editing lesson. The differences show how to keep the more important stories in line while making it okay to let some of the others go… I’m enjoying them.
