Review: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats Up the Marvel Universe.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats Up The Marvel UniverseThe Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats Up The Marvel Universe by Ryan North
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Oh, Squirrel Girl…

This was a fun jaunt into the world of the squirrel and how a superhero can beat up the Marvel Universe without too much violence. (Violence doesn’t bother me, but for the sake of the review, I thought I should mention it.)

I love that Squirrel Girl is an outside of the box superhero. Her, Peggy Carter, Ms. Marvel, Deadpool…I’d say they have their own thing without being a typical comic type story. These are the comics I like to read more than Captain America, or Iron Man with the typical comic fare. Squirrel Girl didn’t disappoint.

So then why the three stars?

I thought there would be more humor. There were a few moments of needing to laugh out loud, but I went into the story with the idea in my head that I’d be laughing more than not. (Again, Deadpool was ringing in the background on that idea. That’s a self-imposed idea I went into the story with.) I think I just wanted to laugh…because Squirrel Girl feels like she’d be snarky and funny. I didn’t think that she may be more serious like Ms. Marvel.

Also, the story felt squished in parts. I mean, I understand that comics are limited by numbers of panels and pages. (page limits are the worst, honestly.) But as Squirrel Girl went through her beating up of the Marvel ‘Verse, it was panel after panel of having a number and the superhero with the image of Squirrel Girl the victor. I’d like to know how it went down.

The art was fun and colorful. A lot of pinks and cuteness with all the squirrels. It was something different than say Spider-man and I enjoyed the balance of comic book and cuteness. I liked the diverse cast of crazies…I mean…characters. I liked the start, liked the end. The middle is where it muddled for me.

Still, though, I’d recommend this. For a unique girl hero, also because it was enjoyable–art and story. There are definitely mentionable parts that stick in my mind, but I do try my dernedest to do these spoiler free…so I’m zippering my mouth here.

THREE SOLID STARS!
