The Best of 2016 and what’s coming 2017…

What a year. Carrie Fisher will be so missed. Our Princess/General Leia. (And might I recommend a viewing of The ‘Burbs?) All the music greats we had: George Michael, Prince, David Bowie. My grandmother’s passing…

Let’s skip all the bad, because we can’t be bringing in the new with all that baggage and bad karma.

The good of the year. Well, there was Captain America Civil War, aka The Avengers 3. Westworld was great. Stranger Things.

A lot of people out there fighting for what’s right and good in the world.

Personally, I wrote. A lot. Have writer’s block, for months. Completed a few stories, though most are in first draft form still. I had full requests and partials for Love, Darrows–Thankful for agents agreeing that Cupid can have a boyfriend. Rethinking the genre of that one, though. Completed NaNoWriMo with my series, Human Touch‘s book 4, Me & Johnny. Got a job working for a great company and working with some fun and diverse people.

Completed my Goodreads Reading Challenge of 100 books for this year, read and reviewed.

{the Year in Review on Goodreads: see it here.}

My favorites of 2016

Asking me to choose just one isn’t going to work. As I sit typing, I can think of the majority of books I read this year and find ones I loved so much. And most on my favorites list weren’t necessarily published in 2016. Which I am fine with since I believe all stories are timeless. Even the contemporaries.

Favorite YA

Has to go to the Cinder series by Marissa Meyer. Not only was it a great twist on the classic fairy tales, Carswell Thorn and Cress. They just won it for me. I still daydream about them, though I will not write a fanfic.

Favorite Graphic Novel

This goes to the Scott Pilgrim Series by Bryan Lee “Bread makes you fat?” O’Malley. (Because it seems in every book, Mr. O’Malley has this bread obsession. LoL) I still pull out one of the books and read a bit of it, go over the pictures. Laugh. Definitely a win for years to come.

Favorite Comic

This is sort of cheating since Marvel’s Agent Carter could also be a graphic novel. But it is one of my most favorites because of the included Cher Chez le Femme. My forever ship. Steggy. Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter together…something the MCU really never wanted to give us. No matter how much Steve loved his best girl.

Favorite LGBTQ

I don’t think I read enough of these this year. But of the ones I did, Gear Shark took it. It was one of those “coming to terms with the fact I, a guy, am in love with a guy stories,” but what this one had that most I’ve read never touched was the hatred and violence that can go along with being gay (or lesbian or trans, and more power to you all for having to deal with such an asinine hatred from people). That’s really where I had to keep reading. What were they going to do?

Favorite Book Award Winner

The Absolute True Diary of a Part-time Indian. This story stuck in my head. Not just because I knew the area and places mentioned, but because it gave an inside peek into a culture that really most of literature just doesn’t touch. It was so good. So sweet. So heartfelt. Just pure honesty on a page. Even being fictional.

Favorite Literary Fiction

Jane Two is going to be one of those stories that sit in the heart for a very long time. It was a story about love. A first love. A love of your life. A love that stays with you and never dies, though it may very well remain an unrequited love. It was truly a beautiful tale and I am so glad I never gave up on finding it. One of my highest recommends of the year.

Leaving 2016 behind like dust blowing in the wind as a car speeds down a country road…

It felt like 2017 would never get here, as rough and bullying as 2016 was. The low was hit, and we can only rise from here, right? Leaving out the politics of it all [here in the US] when I say that 2017 will be a great year. For entertainment, books, the good in life.

We have a new Guardians of the Galaxy movie coming. Avengers: Infinity War parts 1 & 2 will begin filming. Another Star Wars film coming…

My writing goals for 2017?

A lot of pages. I need to get final drafts done, manuscripts out to agents. I would love to take a class or two to help with my writing to see what I’m missing or what I can fix. I have stories yelling to be told right now. Three to be exact. All starring my muse in one way or another. I’ve got to get out on social media more with my writing. Still considering a self-pub if I can get the massive amount of money I need for an editor.

SO no word totals. Just putting words on a page, handwritten, digitally, make stories into something more than thoughts in my head.

Keep doing book reviews. Keep reading. And there are some promising books coming.

Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth has been on my TBR list for a while. (Only a few more weeks to that one!) Plus a new Four story from Divergent!!!! (I CAN’T WAIT!!!)

I had the fortune of reading two soon to be releases this past month or so. (Thanks to their publishers and Net Galley.) I highly recommend finding these in the new year:

This was a beautiful story. Refreshing. My first “Christian” read. Touching. Definitely makes me teary when I think about this wonderful book. Don’t let the Christian thing push you away. It was a part of the tale, but it wasn’t preachy nor did it consume the whole story.

On the opposite end of that, in a way…

I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard at a romcom before. It was amusing and funny and well done. Perfect romcom to start off the year!!! I can’t wait for the other ones, too.

And then from Paula Hawkins, who wrote Girl on the Train…which was so good I couldn’t put it down!!!…Into The Water. A whole new twisty tale. This one is right up there with Divergent’s post epilogue on my TBR list.

Those are just a very few on my lists. The closer books. Who knows what favorites will emerge as we move throughout the year?

Reading themes start tomorrow. I’ve skipped the past two months as I’ve been too busy between writing/reading and working to do them. Resolution 35: Get back to the themes. (total fake resolution number.)

Have a great New Year!!!

The Captain America image was my own screenCap (pun totally intended) from The Avengers, my own paid copy of that film.

Goodreads COngrats image was a screencap from my phone.

NaNoWriMo gave me that banner when I completed the challenge.

Thank you for reading!

#AmWriting – It’s been a while…

…since I’ve done one of these posts. Not that I haven’t been writing.

Recently, one of my CP’s asked if I had anything he could read. Since I’ve not started on the novel, and the last one I finished was the “RomCom for myself”, and the current one is nothing I plan on publishing in any way, shape, or form, I told him that there was nothing. But then it stuck me like lightning to someone on the golf course with a club in the air… My novel: SoS…Sync or Swim. It’s been in draft two status since last September(?), August(?). Maybe even July(?). In other words I haven’t bothered with it since last summer sometime. For me the story has this gap where it starts to feel different. The problem is I can’t find it myself. So I forked over the first chapter and hopefully, by the end of this year, I can call it done and finally have it on the query circuit.

That’s the current edit project. Now, the current writing projects:

I’m sure I lost most of my followers by posting my fan fiction piece, “Hey, 6B.” here on this blog. But, for reasons I will not disclose, I feel like I was destined to do it. Plus, it’s been great at keeping focused on something other than the real life insanity that I have going on…and the one thing I have yet to click about the new novel I’ve been plotting.

“Hey, 6B.” will finish being posted within a week or so. I apologize for that to those of you who are following that could care less or aren’t into that sort of stuff. I thank the few readers I do have for this story. Not that the numbers mean anything to me. It’s a special thing to have a few people reading something I’m doing for fun and going along the ride. Especially since I’ve not pimped out this story in anyway…and a few people found it on their own. It means a lot. Thank you. So very much.

Up next, a quick one-shot story that will not be posted here. Then a birthday tale for one of the best RobSquaders I know (someone I’ve ‘known’ online since the EARLY Twilight days). Again, not going to be posted here. So then why am I even mentioning them? Because in my mind, I have until the end of the second one (or the first depending one what I get done when) to get this new novel’s quirk worked out. I just need that one detail that gives this story a unique purpose. Something not cliché or typical. It’s right there within my grasp, so close…

Because that GIANT WRITING GOAL of getting started on this story looms in my near future. IF I could just Indiana Jones grab it and get the ball boulder rolling…

Je suis fini.

Wings is now a final draft. A job VERY well done, if I say so myself. I am over the moon thrilled with it. THE best RomCom I’ve written to date. I just need a long summary at this point in the game…and I’m fully ready for Pitch Wars or copyrighting and posting this somewhere.

(hey, tonguetwied, Shelly…look in the back ground of that gif. Notice something? ΖΘ…? O.o!)

It’s sorta nice to be back on the tail end of a story. Happy Happy Joy Joy!

Though I know boredom is lurking around any corner, ready to strike. She’s never any fun, that one. I’m hoping to avoid her this time.

Between 4:00 and 4:30 this morning, I had an epiphany about  the opus, Human Touch, and a way to placate the readers en masse with an exciting opening while keeping my need to start the story with them–Nikki & McClane–because it ends with them. (It’s my reason that makes no sense, but perfect sense.) Meaning another rewrite is looming closer. (I’m sorta happy about this, because my “flashback heart” loves this idea.) And if I get stuck there, I’m thinking of pulling out the other [what I call] Romances in New York stories and rewriting those–Life Imitating Art & Life Inspiring Art, & If Only in my Dreams…though this one is a script, I want it in novel form. Then, there’s Darrows. I still don’t know what to do with him. I’m leaning towards copyrighting him and putting him out there to see how he flies. Plus, I’m also working on two projects to go along with the Captain America arm warmers I finished about a month ago. The best way of keeping busy until the next story slaps me in the face and demands to be written.

Happy Monday, everyone! Hope inspiration finds you!

#AmEditing almost complete.

As in ten chapters remain to be edited and fixed. This random system of chapters has been a Godsend…And I love my story even more than before. That’s how it should be when you edit. Plus, it helps to have the inspiration handy. Keeps me motivated. Reminds me why I wrote this story. Captures the essence of what I’ve written. And, next week (or is it the week after), I’ll be entering it into PitchWars. And if that doesn’t work out, the plan is to copyright and post/publish it here, Amazon, Wattpad…Everywhere I can.

And yes…I am leaving the credits remark…because in my head, it’s the PERFECT RomCom.

So much for the check in…off to finish out another chapter in this not-so-much-editing-hell.

#AmEditing, #AmListening, #AmReading, #AmWatching

#AmFeelingLikeAMajorGoofOff right now.

Only two chapters edited for today, so far. But, the upside of this time’s editing process…I have yet to fall into the story! Meaning I am getting some real work done on Wings by sticking to the random chapter rule. It’s GREAT! I have no idea why I never thought of doing this before…

While #AmEditing, I #AmListening to the new Panic! at the Disco album, Death of a Bachelor. Pure Panic! at it’s best! The songs are so eclectic and different and yet so familiar and loved. Best song? IDK. Depends on my mood, though I will say a few songs are definitely stuck in my head, though.

I do not listen while #AmReading, though.

Especially with the new find…that I’m not quite sure what to make of yet. The Oddfits by Tiffany Tsao. {on Goodreads here}

I’m just over 30% complete with it (according to the bottom corner of my Kindle) and I’ve felt enraged, teary, and starving to death. Murgatroyd Floyd…something about that name…I LOVE IT, and honestly, it was something that drew me to the book to begin with. I’m so very curious to see where this story goes. Because, as of now, I don’t have a single clue.

And when I’m not editing, listening, or reading, I #AmWatching a few shows. There’s X-Files…which brings that feeling of needing to be paranoid about everything back to the forefront, Lucifer, still looking for the first half of season 6 of Pretty Little Liars, waiting for the new season of Baby Daddy (and watching reruns of the episodes I’ve just watched), and my favorite of them all right now:

Not because she’s related to Cap. Okay, so because she’s related to Cap, but so much more: fantastic storylines, so much humor, Easter eggs, and awesome that is not limited to Peggy herself, but she is the tops. (oh…don’t pick up 1940s lingo…don’t…) Two episodes into the sophomore season of Agent Carter and I want season three like now! I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH!

I will admit, I did tear up while watching the second episode of the season. All because Peggy danced with a Jason Wilkes and I thought of Winter Soldier when Cap/Steve goes to visit a bed-ridden Peggy and says:

Even now…*tears*…If you don’t tear up at that…then I don’t know.
They never got their dance.

Ah well…*sniffle*…must get back to editing so I can enjoy some Peggy Carter awesome tonight! Hope all is well with you all!
