Reading Theme for March 2016.

I know I am tackling this early, but I ran out of short story compilations and Tiny Stories takes only a few moments to read…I need something to keep me occupied while I wait to hear about #PitchMadness…so I’m going into March a few days early…

March. That odd month where it feels like winter is clashing with summer. Plants decide to start coming out of hiding. It gets a touch warmer then freezes you to death. In like a lion and out like a lamb.

Of course when I think about Lion and Lamb…

Yeah. Twilight. Some habits are hard to break. I still sneak peeks at Eclipse often.

But, I’ve already read Twilight more times than I care to share. Not near the triple digits but still… The point of reading themes is to get something new in my hands for my eyes to scan, my brain to decipher, and [hopefully] my heart to melt. Sorry, Divergent, I’ve read you already, too.

Who doesn’t love that moment when Four and Tris meet? *happy sigh*

No romance, though. I’m still on the “I’ve written a romantic comedy so I can’t read anything like it” phase, because I know I’ll start daydreaming about my story, really start nitpicking at it like a chimp trying to rid fleas off its friend…and I don’t want to dislike anything about Wings. (It’s also why I have three stories in first draft only. Got picky about everything.)

But I am going to go with Spring in this month’s theme. Ish. Technically.

Not finish a series I’ve started and haven’t finished because it was time to change themes (Legend…not that it was bad, but I desperately wanted a RomCom to read) or maybe I’ve been waiting for the next installment (see Illuminae…dying to know when book two will be out). I have quite a collection of untouched series, including but not limited to: The Siren by Kiera Cass, The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, The Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer, Red Rising by Pierce Brown, The Wayward Pines series by Blake Crouch, The Magician series by Charlie N. Holmberg, a few more Hugh Howey series…and so many more. I’m not even counting the romance series in this choice…

Needless to say, I have quite the collection of collections.
The rules for this month:

  • I must have all available books in the series.
    • That takes out quite a few sets including The Siren.
  • It has to be entirely new to me.
    • Sorry Hitchhiker’s…I’ve read one of you before.
    • quite a few other’s too.
  • My heart needs to smoke with admiration for the story
    • like so many stories before
    • big shoes to fill

That leaves me with The Uglies and Cinder.

Tough choice as everyone tells me I need to read them both. It seriously came down to a coin toss.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer.

I have no idea what the story is about. I do admit the cover art grabbed my attention, therefore I do tend to judge a book by its cover…hence the collection began…and I have all of the available books in the series…and I hope I’m not going to suffer cliffhanger-itis at the end of this. Already 20 pages into Cinder and am enjoying it. I’m looking forward finding out how this Cinderella tale will blow me away (according to everyone who suggests I read it).

Out of curiosity, are there any other series I need to keep an eye for? Any I need to read?

I’m always looking to expand my TBR list. As if there aren’t more than enough books there already.

All gifs found on giphy.com, except the Cinder one found on Pinterest…all remain property of their original owners.

Bonus points to the person who knows why I have a gif of Chris Evans smoking…

Is fanfiction really that bad?

Really? Seriously?

In my opinion, no. But then, that’s where writing really came back into my life. I found it through reading and writing my own stories during a the hyper-Twi-fangirl moment years. I never saw it as something horrible and to only be whispered about…unless you’re reading that sort of fic…but it’s not entirely bad. It’s a way to celebrate what you love most about the characters. Take them and give them different situations and lives. There are fics for everything from Star Wars to Captain America to Dr. Who and Harry Potter. Though, honestly, I have only ventured into the realm of Twilight fanfiction…

by Alex at TheKaskProject-art

Then I saw that pic on tumblr one day last week. It’s AMAZING!
(see Alex’s blog here: {Adventures of a Shippy Mind} )
This is like two of my Happy Chris Evans worlds colliding into one great masterpiece.
And the story of Bucky Barnes meets Colin Shea exploded in my head. “Hey, 6B.” was born.

And because I am desperately trying to get away from SoS before I hate that story…because I hit a major block there, though I knew where it went wrong and what to fix, it’s not clicking still…and I want to save this next story, Wings, for NaNoWriMo this year (last year, I started Darrows far too soon), I am going to tackle a quick fic or two.

A lot of authors seem to frown on fics. I don’t know why, really. Is it not an original story? For the most part, yes. But just because there are characters that have been created by someone else, doesn’t mean the story can’t be unique and original. There are plenty of books in the bookstore that are retellings using characters we have known forever.

Each one of those stories have been written using characters of someone else’s story. Characters we all know, whether we love them or not. Each one is an independent tale of the character, intriguing and fulfilling in every way. These types of books are accepted and loved by many. Does it really make a difference if the story is commissioned to be written and sold for profit? No. Because those fiction authors and artists do it more from the standpoint of love for the character and story.

On the converse side of that, there are a few out there that started out as fanfics, but are now independent, full-fledged original stories.

Disclaimer: I have read Beutiful Bastard in both incarnations, fic and novel. I have not read Fifty Shades in any incarnation. Wallbanger I read as a fic, I own on Kindle.

And I’m not saying every story out there is literary gold. I’m not saying that every story out there is right or wrong. What I am saying is that every story out there is just as original and worthy of one’s time. Profit lines shouldn’t matter–though I know they do. It’s all supposed to be fun and enjoyment in a shared love.

And that’s how I see it. I don’t care if I lose credibility points as an author. That’s really on the person judging. I’ll be proud of this no matter. Granted, this past week, I went back and forth over writing it. I do need to keep off one story for sanity purposes. I do need to put off another story for a fun little writing competition. And this is all for fun. I’ve always wanted to combine something awesome outside of Twilight and Fright Night (still have never published that one, but I do love the story so much)… And this is what’s calling my name. I will post it to Ao3, under my “Storywrtr” moniker. I will post it on my tumblr–Storywrtr. I am thinking of posting it here.

I’m so uber exicited to be going back to where this journey began!

“Flux capacitor fluxing.”

Long live fanfiction and nostalgia!

Taking a break from writing…

In honor of kiTT’s birthday (the fabulous TongueTwied), it’s time for another episode of:

Theme music:

*West Twilight Hills High*

“Hey, Steve. What’s up with that grin? Who are you looking at?”

“The new girl? What new girl?”

“No! Not her, Steve! She’s such a mean girl.”

“Her either. You can’t ever tell what she’s thinking.”

Ah, the new girl. “She’s…cute, I suppose.”

i'm cool

“Whatever you say, New Girl.” As if she can show up at Twilight Hills High and be instantly loved by everyone. Not like she’s…

*tardy bell* We’re late for first.

Oh, geez, they’re at it again.
“Dylan, Brenda, tardy bell!”

“Hey Liam, Annie.” I see they’re dating now. Shocker.

Kelly and Brandon are so cute together.

“Don’t ever say Brandon is cute out loud, New Girl.”

Too late. Andrea already overheard us and now we’re on her lisTT. Her obsession with Brandon Walsh is going way too far. She scares me. I’ll just duck behind Donna and David in hopes their argument distracts her.

Computer class. Something out of the 80s. Our school’s computers are so old, they’re vampires hiding out for a century, trying to blend into modern-day life in our small Pacific Northwest town of seven hundred.

“George.” Surprised he has a shirt on today. Not surprised he’s causing some waves at Twilight Hills High.

“Two girlfriends? You lie, George!”

The rumor mill is in fast forward as George talks about Liam two-timing Annie. Then he has Kelly and Dylan dating as if Brenda and Brandon don’t exist in Twilight Hills, 98210. And the Cullen kids…everyone is saying they’re brothers and sisters who are dating each other. Gross me out. I know for a fact Emmett and Alice are dating the Hale twins and Edward has become fascinated with that new girl.

Not her. Her.

I can’t keep up with George’s absurd theories anymore. As if living in this school everyday wasn’t high drama enough. Can’t wait for lunch.

Happy Birthday to you, my little Jenny from the block. You always make sure the RobSquad has amazing birthdays and we want to give you the same. Ryan Gosling will be around to cook you breakfast, lunch and dinner in bed. Mini will be doing all the chores and HB will be running all the errands to leave you with nothing to do but relax and enjoy. All television stations will be showing 90210 for the entire 24-hour period of your birthday. Radio stations will solely be playing your favorite songs from the 80s and no buses will be anywhere near your peaceful environment. Enjoy! Love you, babe! ~Jeanette.

*lunch time at West Twilight Hills High*

“Hey, new girl, sit with us!”

“Okay, let’s get you acquainted with the who’s who of school. You have the Populars who tend to hang out with only themselves as if this world of Twilight Hills revolves around them and them only.”

“Then you have the Everydays who are cute and sweet, but don’t let that fool you, they are as high drama as they come around this school.”

“I know right! Too bad he’s taken.”

The New Girl stares at the table. The Cullen table.

“They’re the Cullens and the Hales. They only hang out amongst themselves. And date amongst themselves. They never talk to anyone around here. It’s like they’re too blood thirsty to hang out with the rest of us or something. Weird, right?”

“Oh him…? Wait, he’s coming over here. Act casual.”

Of course he’d talk to the New Girl while ignoring the rest of the school. Hello? It’s depressing. I can’t… This is too much.

Looks like the Cullen and Hale duets are actually going to eat something today. Good. Half the school has bets they’re anorexic. I don’t think that. Look at Emmett…he’s built. If anything he only downs protein shakes. And Jasper looks mighty fine just the way he is…mighty fine cowboy…with that Texas twang…and…sorry.

Anyway, I’m glad Jasper dumped Annie for Alice. They’re just adorable together. And Annie seems so happy with Liam…although, having Liam off the market now is a bummer. Wait…what is Annie doing with Naomi? And they’re eating ice cream and wearing summer outfits? Showing off for guys, I’m sure. As if this is July and not November.

Since when are they friends? I thought they hated each other.

Can’t believe the New Girl said that to Edward? Ugh. Wait…Where did he go?
“What do you mean he just took off?”

“Not him. That’s Edward Sullen. One of the funniest guys at this school. He’s cute and possibly available. Umm…I don’t see Edward by the apples at the salad bar. Let’s go check outside.”

Wait. There he is. George was right in one respect. Edward does have a thing for new girls. I mean look at him…he’s dumping the other new girl already… Sheesh. This will be his third one in a week. He cycles through them as though he’s running the around the bases after hitting a homer. As if the rest of the girls at this school are pretty little liars and too easy to read. Not like our blood can’t be fresh and inviting. I’m not jealous.

“Hey, George.” No shirt. That wasn’t long.

“Go to the beach? As long as the New Girl is in…”

Nothing like a day at the beach in November when you live on the west coast.

*commercial break*

*at Twilight Hills Beach Club*

It’s like everyone is here but the Cullens and Hales as they don’t ever come to the beach. Rumor is they’ll melt in the water, but to inhale their intoxicating scent, you know that’s not true; they must shower all the time.

The other new girl says Edward never comes around because he sparkles like mica in the sand on a sunny day. At first, the thought of Sullen wearing all those gold chains came to mind that year he was going through his rapper phase, but then Cullen did have that job at the strip club over in Port Angeles this past summer…as if the other new girl knew anything more about Edward Cullen than the people who have been going to school with him for years.

“New Girl, Steve and Brandon are checking us out.”

No! The new girl is waving at them. Great. That means…*slowly turns around* Yep. Andrea is doing her creeper stare. One day, Andrea will snap and come after us with a knife and hack us to pieces before cooking us like headless rabbits.

*small wave* “Hi, Andrea.” It’s best to stay on her good side.

“There’s Liam. We’ll, see you later, guys.”

The man knows how to make a surf outfit in November look good. I do wonder why Annie isn’t with him though.

Wait… there’s Cullen. That other new girl is so full of iTT! Yeah, Cullen sparkles…charisma-wise sure, but dazzling in the sun? Oh please. She’s just jealous he’s flirting with the New Girl, pulling a surf stunt on land… And all the guys playing along with him, a rarity…

“Who’s birthday? The New Girl’s?”

“House Party for sure!”

Apparently word gets around the beach fast. As we stop for fuel, we run into the Monkeys, and they’re all over the idea of a birthday bash.

*blah blah, whatever legal mumbo jumbo goes here, blah blah*

NEVER THINK that I don’t want you to have an awesome birthday. ALL I NEED is for you to WAKE up today to a PAPER HEART made by mini that says, “SHE WILL BE LOVED” and that’s signed by mini and ATP, Then I’ll know you day was HEAVEN. ~Lisa

*party at Brenda and Brandon’s house*

“The New Girl’s arrived! Let’s get this party underway!”

One, I can’t believe New Girl showed at the party that drunk. Two, if she wants to be that easy, well…she’s got the exact right school to act like that. Three, if Edward’s dancing style turns her on that much, maybe they are meant to be together.

“Let’s get some food into you.”

In the kitchen, we find the party hosts…

“This is great, guys! Thanks for throwing this bash!”

Odd that they aren’t holed up in their bedrooms with their dates like they tend to do at these things.Something isn’t right about this.

“Stay here and eat your cake, New Girl. I’ll be right back.”

“Liam, have you seen Kelly or Dylan?”

“I’ll take that as a no? … Yes? … Maybe? Thanks for your lack of help.”
Where are they? I’ll ask George…Shirtless, of course.

“Obviously not, Edward.”

Can’t believe he’s toasting my sudden awakening into the truth.

“Quit telling me I told you so. Where are they? Brenda and Brandon are getting suspicious.”

The rooftop deck. Not quite the place I’d expect two “friends” to be. They had better not be together. Twilight Hills cannot take any more break-up drama.

Whoa! Liam and Naomi? Okay, I’ve gotta go before they see me. I can’t let Annie know anything about this. She’ll run back to Jasper, Jasper will dump Alice in a heartbeat. Okay, now I need to find Kelly and Dylan and somehow distract Annie from Liam’s whereabouts. Too much, too fast.

It’s not a party until Brandon and Steve sing their best friend song.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, the Monkeys from the OC showed. No one wants the dorks from Oregon Coast High snagging all our party treats. I need to get the guys to uninvite them. “Who said you guys could be here?”

The New Girl, of course. She could at least apologize.

Yep. She totally hammered.

Edward smells her blood alcohol and quickly offers to take care of her. I trust him, though. George told me he was a virgin…and he’s been right about everyone else lately. So that would make him a 111 year old virgin? So that exists in Twilight Hills, 98210. I just wish he didn’t like her when there are much better blue bloods at our school that would taste much sweeter. Not saying myself…but whatever.

And then there they were. Kelly and Dylan. Hanging all over each other. As though it’s no big deal to be doing this to Brandon and Brenda in their home, at their party.

Do I tell Brandon or Brenda? Do I say something to Kelly or Dylan? Too many secrets…too many things seen…Why do these parties always get so out of hand? I’ve got to find George, tell him he was right about Liam, ask his advice about Brandon and Brenda…

“Ummm…George? Who’s this dude?”

Hold on. Alice is doing her far off stare…meaning she’s seeing something about the future that will affect us all.

“What is it Alice? What do you see?”

*End of Episode*

NOOOOOO!!! Who was that guy George was with and will he ever wear a shirt for the whole day? Who is Liam really dating, Annie or Naomi, or are the girls dating each other and stringing Liam along? Does that mean he’d be free to date again? Is it really true that Kelly is with Dylan? And no way Donna likes David. Will Edward ever stop wanting new girls? Will Sullen ever hand over his phone number? Will Jasper run back to Annie after all or will he team up with Liam for the ultimate revenge? At least we won’t have any more creeper stares….By the way, why has Andrea and Steve never hooked up? Seems a rather logical pairing…since they’re both loners in this world of…

Hope this is the BEST REAL FAKE BIRTHDAY EVER, kiTT!!!
Lots of Love from the RobSquad!

69 is a test? Okay.

I was over on Epic Reads’ blog and was reading about this theory to use when you don’t know what book to choose to read. (see the post here ~~~> {Epic Reads: The 69 Test} Supposedly, 69 is where the action is at. Outside of a teenage guy’s mind, that is. Read the page, snippets or otherwise, and if it speaks to you, you might read the book.

I had never heard of that. Usually, I read the back of the book, inside of the book jacket, or online description and think… “Oh, that sounds good. I’ll read it.” or “Nah. Next.” Who knows what books I’ve missed by just doing that…I mean other than ones that didn’t excite me from the get go.

So just for fun, I’ll try it out with a few of my favorites:

“No one seemed concerned about Edward, though I explained over and over that he was the hero — how he had pulled me out of the way and had nearly been crushed, too.”

~Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer

“The finished clock is resplendent. At first glance it is simply a clock, a rather large black clock with a white face and a silver pendulum.”

~The Night Circus, by Erin Morgenstern

“He stares at me, and I don’t look away. He isn’t a dog, but the same rules apply. Looking away is submissive. Looking him in the eye is a challenge. It’s my choice.”

~Divergent, by Veronica Roth

So, does it work? Keeping in mind that these are just a tiny snippet of the page from the hardback copies (unsure if the digital or paperbacks are different…mostly because I’m too lazy to check right now.) I think it’s mixed.

Twilight already had a major event or two happen by this point, although I would wonder, had I not read this book a million times, what exactly did Edward do and why no one seemed to notice.

The Night Circus seems a little boring. That being said, the continuing lines go on to describe how magical this clock is as it transforms into something completely different. A night and day comparison. Honestly, though, if I hadn’t already read this book, I wouldn’t be intrigued enough to read it just from page 69 alone.

Divergent still gets me! Okay…page sixty nine begins in the middle of a sentence, so I would definitely go back to the beginning of it and start. And it would hook me as Tris, is being so snarky to Four. (This moment is at their first meal after the Choosing Day ceremony.) And it would hook me enough to want to know why Tris is being so snarky and her friend, Christina, thinks she has a death wish.

So, let me try this with a few books I haven’t read yet… Again, these are from the hardcover and the “Remastered Full-Color Edition” respectively.

“Sharp rocks dig into S.’s skin as he rests on all fours beneath a pier, coughing seawater.”

~Ship of Theseus, by V. Straka

~which is actually S., by JJ Abrams

“Of course she’s not there, but that doesn’t get me down. I’m still optimistic she’ll arrive.”

~House of Leaves, by Mark Z. Danielewski

S. is a difficult book to put to this test, because this is a book that is a story within a story. What that snippet comes from is the book by V. Straka… Not the annotations of these other characters from the JJ Abrams part of the book. And the whole story within a story has a feel of Inception to me, and that’s why I chose this book to read.

The House of Leaves is so difficult to determine from just that small piece. The page begins in the middle of a thought, but as this book is the most confusing book to read (according to the reviews on Amazon), it’s undetermined if following that sentence/thought would be helpful. Then the part where the snippet came from was in the middle of this guy’s dream and after dream experiences. It leaves one lost…so if it’s something you want to make sense of, you’ll read it. And if it’s so confusing you’ll never find your way out, you might skip it.

And lastly, I am going to try this with a few stories I’ve written…mostly out of my own curiosity to see what I’ve done and if it’s any good.

“Slow motion waves throughout the room as his hand reaches for the door knob, progressing frame by frame. Intense fear takes control immediately. The surge forces me through McClane, slamming the door shut.”

~Human Touch, a YA romance with a paranormal twist

“Everything I had been afraid of happening, was actually happening at that moment. I knew I couldn’t stay there. I managed to get up and stumble my way down to the gym floor. I brushed past Edward quickly as I made my escape.”

~It’s Been Ten Years, the first fanfic I wrote

“I ran my fingers through my hair as Sable came into view. Sitting with her… Well, fuck me sideways…”

~Life Imitating Art, an eromedy

I’ll be the first to admit that I am a little bias about my works. Human Touch is pure genius. I guess if I didn’t feel that way from my snippet, I’d have no business querying my story. Even if you all hate it, I love it. And I would read it. Probably pure bias on my behalf.

It’s Been Ten Years…oh, sigh. That little fic o’ mine. I look at it and love it because it got me back into writing. I look at it and cringe, because I know I can write better than that. I look at it and still think it’s mine no matter what. I own her. So, would I read it? I don’t know. Bella is running from Edward, while Jasper is holding Alice back from killing Edward. Very soapy. And, as it turns out, I do like a good sudsy drama from time to time. But off the snippet? I probably wouldn’t give it a read.

Life Imitating Art. That is the first line on page 69. The first moment my main character, an author,  sees the hottest man on the planet, even if he is her new editor that drives her mentally insane because he’s um-something years younger than her and thinks he knows it all when it comes to editing a book. Oh, something like this, to me, if I’m in that mood to read that kind of story…Yeah. Off that one line, I’d so read the pages bald. Again, I am sure there is a lot of bias in that statement.

I guess for me, I am either a make-up-my-own-story-that-I-want-to-read sort of person, or I really do prefer to judge a book by its cover–the images, colors, and synopsis. I think jumping into a page–69 or otherwise–is quite a dangerous thing. Especially for someone who hates spoilers…and what if the best thing of the book is happening on that page in that moment. It would suck to know that ahead of time.

Filed under books that speak, on the book shelf, rêveur, read

I love some books to death.

What do I do with a book I really love?

I destroy it. In a sense.

Back when I was younger, I tried my dernedest to not bend the spines on my paperbacks. Pet Sematary and Misery were perfection when you looked at the spine, but to look at the covers…they were torn, barely surviving with the bends and so very loved. Back to the Future and Ferris Bueller books, too.

But then for a long while I just didn’t read but the random Stephen King book and some comics…mostly nerd into hero stuff. *sigh* But most stories just didn’t grab my attention.

Until I came upon a little movie I wanted to see. And this movie was a book before. But like I do, I wait until I see the movie before reading a book. Just because I know I’ll hate the movie…and I get character voices so I don’t have to listen to my own drone on and on as I read…The movie was Twilight. Yeah, yeah, I know. Everyone has such a love/hate thing for that movie/book series. I don’t care what people say; for me, it opened a world.

I read those four books in four days. And of the four, my favorite is…

Something about Eclipse spoke to me. I can’t explain it. I could read that book every day and never get tired of it. There’s all sorts of back stories…so much going on in the story itself…Jasper got to have a voice. It made me want to read…and note…and draw…

It’s the first one I’ve actually loved to the point it’s falling apart. You could probably ask what page what event happened, and I’d flip through and find it through all my notations…and if I couldn’t find it, I’d make sure to mark it.

And then I saw a book at Costco. The Night Circus. It could have been the black and white cover or the premise, but something told me to buy it. It was added to my book collection. And one day, I was bored and decided to read it. And fell in love with a story that is just so different…and unique. And because I refuse to destroy a hardcover, I found a paperback version and removed all the pages to get the thoughts and feelings I had for this book. It had to be something different. Just like that story.

I’ve done art journaling on some of the pages. Others I have used ribbons and clear letters to convey the illusions going on in the story. Then there are the dimensional aspects of making something 3D with the words of the pages, my favorite being the Wishing Tree… I took the pieces of art–keeping them all with the black, white and red theme of the story–and put them into the hardback so as you read the story, you experience it visually as well.

one side of the card…

the reverse side of the card

I was thinking that when The Night Circus art is all said and done, I’d leave it somewhere for someone to find…to read for themselves and experience it as something not done before. (Yes, I know about S by JJ Abrams now…should have worked quicker on this.)

And now it’s Divergent‘s turn. I don’t know what it is about the trilogy (Divergent, Insurgent, & Allegiant) that really just got into my head. I don’t know why I am so OBSESSED with Four/Tobias Eaton. I don’t know why I just adore everything he says. I do know, I love this book to pieces, although it doesn’t quite reflect that love yet. This is my art journal book. I’ve been underlining and doing notation like Eclipse, but I’ve also been drawing images and quotes like The Night Circus…And when it’s all said and done, I hope to have every page in color, the spine barely able to hold on, and the cover so loved and worn like a favorite sweater on a cold winter day.

choosing day – the bowls of the five factions.

There are many, many other books I have liked. Some I’ve loved. They’re even on my favorites list…but I only own one copy or they don’t evoke the need to notate, quote, image…And I can’t wait to meet the next one in this Bookish Love Life I’m living. What book will have me buying every format so I can keep one pristine, one read, and one über loved into pieces…being held together with rubber cement and rubber bands.

What books do you love beyond all others?

FOURGASM ALERT!!!— Next Tuesday…Four will be out! (Parts of the Divergent series told from Tobias’ POV!!!) I’m so dying. One week from today!
